Biography
Pavlos Kalligas was born in 1883 in London . His father was the famous Greek politician and city planner Petros Kalligas (1856-1940). His mother, Julia Rally, was from a famous Chios family of merchants and shipowners of Rallis . Pavlos Kalligas was the grandson of his namesake , a prominent lawyer, economist, historian, writer and minister. Calligas graduated from Oxford University , Department of Chemistry. But in 1907 he went to Munich , where he entered the Academy of Fine Arts and studied painting with Gabriel Huckle [1] . Calligas settled in Greece during the Balkan Wars , in the years 1912-1913, having visited London and Paris before. In 1917 he took part in the exhibition of the Union of Greek Artists.
From 1922 to 1928 , he maintained a workshop in Plaka (Athens) , together with Pericles Byzantios and Phocion Roc . In 1931, Calligas exhibited his work with the "Art Group". In 1934 and 1936 , Calligas took part in the Venice Biennale [1] . The artist also took part in the 1938 Pan-Greek Exhibition. Pavlos Kalligas died in Athens in 1942 , during the triple German-Italo-Bulgarian occupation of Greece. Kalligas painted mostly landscapes and portraits, leaving behind a limited number of works of impressionistic and post-impressionist manners. The artist's works are kept in the National Art Gallery of Greece [1] . The retrospective exhibition of the artist's works took place in 1961 in the gallery "Zigus" (όςυγ - Libra) [2] [3] . The artist was married twice and had two children: a daughter, Maya Kallig, and a son, Petros Kalligas.
