Biography
Born on November 7 ( 19 ), 1837 in Riga . He studied at the Riga Gymnasium , then graduated from the Medical Faculty of the University of Dorpat (1860), where in 1861 he received the degree of doctor of medicine and from 1862 was an assistant in a medical clinic and assistant professor at the Department of Anatomy; from 1864 he also worked at the Anatomical Institute.
In 1866 he was elected an extraordinary professor , in 1875 - an ordinary professor of anatomy and director of the Anatomical Institute.
From 1885 to 1912 - Professor of the University of Königsberg (in 1887 - Dean of the Faculty of Medicine). From 1886 he became a member of the Leopoldin Academy.
Corresponding Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in the Department of Physics and Mathematics (biological discharge) since December 4, 1904.
