Biography

Born in Rustenburg , in East Prussia, on December 20, 1811, on the very day when his father, the burgomaster of that city, died. Thanks to the cares of his stepfather, the director of the Kruger Gymnasium, Karl Reichert received a good education: he first studied at the Rustenburg gymnasium, and then entered the medical faculty of Koenigsberg University , where he was greatly influenced by the famous embryologist Karl Baer . However, having studied here for only half a year, the Reichter, with the assistance of the Berlin professor Dieteritsi [2] , who knew him as a high school student, entered the Berlin Military Medical Institute of King Frederick Wilhelm . In 1836, he received a doctorate for his thesis "De arcubus sic dictis bronchialibus", in which, based on anatomical studies, he described the organs developing from gill arches.

Working at Charité , he was an assistant and then a prosector at the Department of Anatomy of the University of Berlin . In 1841 he received the degree of habilitated doctor .

In 1843 he was invited as an ordinary professor of the Department of Comparative Anatomy at the Imperial University of Dorpat ; For some time he was dean of the medical faculty.

In 1853 he moved to the department of physiology at the University of Breslavl , was the director of the physiological institute in Breslavl.

In 1858, he took the place of professor at the newly opened department of anatomy at the Berlin High School (Hochschule), where he remained until his death on December 24, 1883.

In 1859, he was elected a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . From December 7, 1850 - Corresponding Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (biological rank); since 1860 - member of the Leopoldin Academy.

The husband of his daughter Alina Reichert was a classic archaeologist and philologist Heinrich Heidemann .

  • "Die feinere Anatomie d. Gehörschnecke "(" Abhandl. K. preuss. Ak. Wiss. ", 1864).

Not all Reichert's research was accepted by the scientific community and was not sufficiently evaluated, which is explained by the fact that it was distinguished by its extremely sharply negative attitude both to Darwin's theory and to new trends in the theory of cells [3] ; To the end of his life and in lectures, he extremely impatiently spoke about these theories.
