Biography
Ivan Melnikov was born on September 4, 1914 in the village of Balykley (now - Inzhavinsky district of the Tambov region ). After finishing seven classes of the school, he first worked on a collective farm , then was secretary of the village council. In 1932, he graduated from teacher training courses, after which he worked as a teacher. In 1935, Melnikov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1938 he graduated from the Ryazan Infantry School, in 1939 - from the Kharkov Military Aviation School of Pilots. Since June 1941 - on the fronts of World War II [1] .
By January 1945, Captain Ivan Melnikov was the senior flight officer of the 98th Guards Separate Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment of the Red Army Air Force Command. By that time, he had made 106 sorties to aerial reconnaissance and aerial photography of enemy targets and troops, including those in the enemy’s rear, as a result of which the command received important intelligence [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 29, 1945, for “skillfully completing command assignments, courage and heroism shown during reconnaissance flights” of the guard, captain Ivan Melnikov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal [ 1] .
After the war, Melnikov continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1960, with the rank of major, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived and worked in Kharkov . He died on February 3, 1981 [1] .
He was also awarded five orders of the Red Banner , two orders of the Red Star , and a number of medals [1] .
