Origin

Lucius Amelia belonged to the patrician family of Emilians , which the ancient authors attributed to the oldest families of Rome [1] . One of the eighteen oldest tribes got its name in honor of this genus [2] . His genealogy was raised either to Pythagoras [1] or to the king Noume Pompilius [3] , and one of the versions of the tradition brought by Plutarch calls Emilia the daughter of Aeneas and Lavinia , who gave birth to Mars Romulus - the legendary founder of Rome [4] [5] .

According to the Capitoline Fasta , his father, Lucius Amelia, had a prementer of Quint , and his grandfather had Gnei [6] . Nevertheless, there is a suggestion that Lucius’s grandfather was Quint Aemilius Pap , Consul of 282 and 278 BC. e. [7]

Biography

Lucius Aemilius is first mentioned in sources in connection with his consulate, who fell to 225 BC. e. [8] His colleague was the plebeian Guy Atilius Regulus [9] Orozii calls the Pope mistakenly [8] Lucius Amelia Katul [10] , Pliny the Elder — Lucia Emily Paul [11] .

In that year, several Gallic tribes of fighting , insubr, and gezat gathered a large army to invade Italy. According to Polybius , they had 50 thousand infantry and 20 thousand horsemen. The Pope fell in command of the war against them, while Regulus went to Sardinia to suppress the uprising [12] .

Lucius Amelia with the main forces is located at Arimin , blocking the enemy's way through Umbria ; one of the praetors defended Etruria . The Gauls, choosing the western route, defeated the praetor at the city of Fezula and besieged the remnants of his army on the hill, but at that moment the consul appeared. Then the Gauls decided to retreat to their lands through Liguria in order to preserve rich booty; Lucius Amelia followed them, not daring to a big battle, but hoping to inflict damage to the enemy in small clashes. The second consul, Guy Atilius, soon landed at Pisa and barred the way of the Gauls, so that they were between two fires [13] .

At the city of Telamon, the Romans from both sides attacked the Gauls . At the same time, the Pope's army acted against the insubr and the Gezates; Regulus had already died in the battle at the beginning of this battle, but nevertheless the Romans won a complete victory. According to Polybius, 40 thousand Gauls were killed and another 10 thousand, including one of the leaders, were captured. Lucius Amelia, developing success, invaded the lands of the fighting and returned to Rome with a huge booty. For his victory, he was awarded the triumph [14] [15] .

In 220 BC. e. Emilia was elected censor with plebey Guy Flaminius [16] [15] . In 216 BC. e. after the battle of Cannes due to the lack of money in the treasury, he was appointed one of the triumvirs for the conduct of money matters ( lat. triumviri mensarii ) [17] [18] .
