Biography
Anatoly Melnikov was born on July 3, 1914 in the village of Tonkino [K 1] . Before being drafted into the army, he first worked on the railway, then he headed the collective farm . In 1937, Melnikov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He participated in the Polish campaign and the Soviet-Finnish war . In 1940, Melnikov graduated from advanced training courses for command personnel. Since the beginning of World War II - on its fronts. In 1942 he graduated from the courses "Shot" [2] .
By September 1944, Senior Lieutenant Anatoly Melnikov commanded a machine-gun company of the 1343th Infantry Regiment of the 399th Infantry Division of the 48th Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Poland . On September 4, 1944, Melnikov, along with machine-gun crew, was one of the first to cross the Narev River in the area of Dvorske south of the city of Ruzhan and took an active part in the battles for capturing and holding the bridgehead on its western shore, repelling nine German counterattacks. In those battles, Melnikov was wounded twice, but continued to fire from the machine gun at the enemy, until he lost consciousness and was sent to the hospital [2] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for “exemplary fulfillment of command assignments and shown courage and heroism in battles with the German invaders,” Senior Lieutenant Anatoly Melnikov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 7985 [2] .
After the war, Melnikov was transferred to the reserve. He lived in Kirov , worked at an electric machine-building plant. He died on April 20, 1979 [2] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner and World War II 2nd degree, a number of medals [2] .
In honor of Melnikov named street in Kirov [2] .
