Biography

Born December 4, 1942 in Vladivostok. His father is a journalist Aron Iosifovich Stonik (1912-2011), an honorary citizen of Vladivostok.

In 1965 he graduated with honors from the Department of Chemistry of the Far Eastern State University .

In 1969 he defended a Ph.D. thesis at the Far Eastern State University on the topic “Syntheses Based on Lithium Derivatives of Hydroacridines”.

Since 1970 he has been working at the Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences G. B. Elyakova , first as a junior (1970-1973), then a senior researcher (1973-1976), head of the laboratory [1] (since 1977).

In 1987 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Biphilic physiologically active compounds from echinoderms and sponges. Structure and properties ”, at the N. D. Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry .

Since 1989, a professor.

Since 1990 - Deputy Director of the Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry FEB RAS named after G. B. Elyakova .

In 1997, he was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

Since 2002 - Director of TIBOKh FEB RAS .

Scientific activity

Beginning in 1976, V. A. Stonik led ten scientific marine expeditions to the R / V “Callisto”, “Professor Bogorov” and “Academician Oparin”, conducted in various areas of the oceans .

He and his students determined the chemical structure and studied the properties of about 500 new compounds, mainly marine secondary metabolites of various chemical nature. New groups of natural compounds have been discovered, including bipolar sphingolipids [2] , unusual sterols, new series of alkaloids, alkaloid steroids [3] , hexa- and pentanorlanostane glycosides, and others. Among the natural compounds found by him and his students are superactive antitumor agents with a new mechanism of cytotoxic action ( varacin C ), powerful immunostimulants (cucumariosides), substances with anticarcinogenic and anti-burn properties. V. A. Stonik participated in the development and organization of the production of several medicinal and veterinary drugs [4] .

Among his students are 25 candidates and 7 doctors of sciences.

He is a member of the editorial boards of the international scientific journal Natural Product Communications and domestic scientific journals "Bioorganic Chemistry", "News of the Academy of Sciences, Chemical Series", "Bulletin of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences."

It has a high international Citation Index for scientific articles (Cl tot over 5800) and a Hirsch index h ~ 32 [5] .

Awards and Prizes

  • Laureate of the M. M. Shemyakin Prize (1995)
  • He was awarded medals of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" I (2013) [6] and II (1999) [7] degrees.
