Biography
Vasily Melezhik was born in 1926 in the village of Belousovka (now the Chernukhinsky district of the Poltava region of Ukraine ). After finishing seven classes of the school he worked on a collective farm . In 1944, Melezhik was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since November of the same year - on the fronts of World War II, he was a shooter of the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Regiment of the 99th Infantry Division of the 46th Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front . Distinguished himself during the liberation of Hungary [1] .
A group of Soviet soldiers, which included Melezhik, crossed the Danube on December 5, 1944, in the area of the settlement of Mariakhaz , 3 kilometers north of the city of Erchi and captured a bridgehead on its opposite shore. In those battles, Melezhik personally destroyed 2 cars and a large number of enemy soldiers and officers, took an active part in repelling five German counterattacks. When he was surrounded by a group of enemy soldiers, Melezhik killed three of them, and captured two more. March 3, 1945 Melezhik died in battle. He was buried in the city of Erci [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945 for "courage and heroism shown during the crossing of the Danube and holding the bridgehead", Red Army soldier Vasily Melezhik was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and a number of medals [1] .
