Biography

Born in 1902 in Donji Wakuf in a family with five children, of which he and his two brothers - Chadomil and Miliva - became priests [1] .

On April 5, 1925, Smilyan Franyo Chekad was ordained priest . He studied in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where in 1928 he received a Ph.D. From 1928 to 1933 he was the editor-in-chief of a weekly Catholic newspaper.

On June 6, 1939, Pope Pius XII appointed Smilian Franjo Chekada as auxiliary bishop of Vrhbosny and titular bishop of Farbetus . On August 6, 1939, in the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ in Sarajevo, Smilian Frano Chekada was ordained a bishop, which was commissioned by Archbishop Ivan Eugengelist Šaric in cooperation with Archbishop Aloisie Stepinac of Zagreb and Bishop Banja Luchi Josip, and Bishop of Zagreb . During World War II, he tried to protect Jews who converted to Catholicism from deportation to Auschwitz , and also hid at least five Jewish children [2] .

After the death of Bishop Skopje Josip Stepan Garich in 1946, he was the apostolic administrator of the diocese until 1951. Participated in the I, II, III and IV sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

On June 12, 1967, Smiljan Franjo Chekada was appointed auxiliary bishop of Vrhbosny and titular bishop of Tibuzabetum .

On January 13, 1970, Pope Paul VI appointed Smilian Franjo Chekada as Archbishop of Vrhbosny. He died on January 18, 1976 in Sarajevo and was buried in a family crypt at the city cemetery in Sarajevo. On October 28, 2011, his remains were transferred to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where they were buried in the crypt, where the sarcophagi of the Archbishops of Vrbosna are located [3] .

In 2010, he was recognized as the righteous man of the world by the Israeli Institute for Disaster and Heroism Yad Vashem [2] .
