History

The increase in barrel length, weapon dimensions and the use of a 7.65 mm Browning cartridge made it possible to bring the characteristics of the gun closer to the requirements for military or police weapons. The pistol turned out to be quite successful, thanks to which Walter Waffenfabrik received a military order for the manufacture of 250 thousand pistols of model No. 4. There were not enough company own capacities to carry out such a large order, so Walter resorted to the services of subcontractors. As a result, model 4 was produced, in addition to Walter, by nine firms in Suhl and Geidersbach .

Device

Walther Modell 4 is a self - loading pistol , the automation of which is based on the use of recoil energy of the free shutter . Trigger trigger type, with the internal location of the trigger. The ejector and a window for removing the cartridges is located on the left side of the shutter. For disassembling weapons, a sleeve is installed in the front of the bolt, which is fixed by a special lever located on the right, in the lower part of the bolt or has a bayonet mount. Sights consist of a front sight located on the front hub and a rear sight on the shutter. Early models had a slot in the upper part of the shutter instead of a rear sight.

The fuse lever is located on the left side of the frame in its rear part.

Varieties

Pistols were produced in four main versions, which differed from each other by marking and some design features.

  • The first option had a lever at the bottom of the shutter on the right to secure the front hub. On the shutter surface, 12 vertical triangular grooves were made.

The front sleeve of the guns of the second and subsequent versions was attached to the bolt with a bayonet mount.

  • The pistols of the second embodiment had seven oblique grooves of rectangular cross section on the side surface of the shutter. The pistols of the second version of a later release appeared on the whole. Pistols of the second option were produced under license by other enterprises. This weapon also has minor marking features.
  • The third option had a trigger lever located inside the frame, and not protruding from the left of the trigger guard. Slotted grooves on the shutter, triangular section, in the amount of 16 pieces.
  • The fourth option differs from the third only in marking features.

Operator countries

  •   The German Empire - the officers of the railway police ( Reichsbahnpolizei ) entered service, during the First World War a certain number of pistols were used as a personal weapon of Reichswehr officers
  •   Weimar Republic - were in service with the Bavarian police until at least 1933
  •   Germany - some samples were used by Volkssturm

In the movie

The Walter of model 4 is shown in the Soviet television movie “ The meeting place cannot be changed ” as the murder weapon of Larisa Gruzdeva (although the characters call the gun “ Bayard ” of 6.35 mm caliber). [1] [2]
