The main architect was Gordon Bunshaft from the union of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill . The construction of the building was completed in 1974 [1] . The cost of renting premises in a building in 2010-2012 reached $ 2150 per year per m² [2] [3] [4] . Among the tenants of the premises are mostly very expensive companies such as Natixis , Kohlberg Kravis Roberts , Apollo Global Management , Silver Lake Partners and Highland Capital Management and hedge funds.

Owner

The building belongs to billionaire Sheldon Solow, who in the 1960s commissioned the architect Gordon Bunshout to build a tower. The building is privately managed and the lease is owned by Sheldon Solow.

Building Structure

The height of the skyscraper is 210 meters, it has 50 floors.

On the ground floor of the building is the Sheldon Solow Gallery, including works by Franz Klein , Matisse and Giacometti and other artists. The gallery is closed to public access [5] .

The concave vertical slope of the facade is similar to another Bunshaf creation - the WR Grace Building, which was also built in 1974 [6] .

Criticism

The New York Times newspaper gave the skyscraper an ambiguous assessment [7] :

The building is made of excellent materials and contains beautiful details, <...> however, with its awkward shape and huge size, it is roughly imposed on one of the most graceful streets of Midtown Manhattan.

Original text
It is a building of exquisite materials and beautiful details, <...> yet its awkward shape and immense size intrude harshly onto one of midtown Manhattan's most elegant streets.

In response to complaints that the inclined reflective walls of the building reveal the unattractive sides of neighboring historic buildings that were previously shaded, a large red sculpture of figure 9 (house number at address) in front of the building was designed in 1979. The essence of the sculpture was to distract the eyes of passers-by from these unsightly walls. The sculpture was designed by graphic artist Ivan Chermaev . It is made of steel with a thickness of more than 1 cm and weighs about one and a half tons [8] .
