About winners

  • The true hero of the 1980 games was the 21-year-old American skater Eric Hayden , who won all 5 distances - a unique case in the history of sports. With five gold medals, Hayden could single-handedly take 3rd place in the overall standings, only the USSR and the German Democratic Republic ahead. Younger sister Erica Beth Hayden won bronze at a distance of 3000 m.
  • In the 15 km separate ski race, Thomas Wassberg had to show better time to win than the Finn Juha Mieto - 41 minutes and 57.64 seconds. Wassberg stopped the stopwatch at the finish line at 41: 57.63, ahead of the Finn by one hundredth of a second - the smallest interval between the first and second place in the history of skiing at the Olympics. The unprecedented nature of this incident and the dramatic nature of the situation were largely the reason for the deregistration of hundredths of a second in cross-country skiing.
  • For the first time in the history of the Olympics, artificial snow was used.
  • 3 gold medals on the account of the Soviet skier Nikolai Zimyatov .
  • For the fourth time in a row, the Soviet biathlete Alexander Tikhonov won the Olympic gold relay.
  • Soviet figure skater Irina Rodnina and East German double- wrestler Ulrich Welling won their third consecutive gold medal.
  • One of the main sensations of the Olympics was the victory of the US hockey team , composed of students and amateurs, over the seemingly invincible Soviet team , which had won five Olympics in a row before that. This victory with a score of 4: 3 was called the “ Miracle on Ice ” and opened the way for Americans to gold medals, which they won not without difficulty.
  • The only gold medals in Liechtenstein’s Olympic history were won by 23-year-old skier Hanni Wenzel , which allowed the small alpine country to occupy a high 6th place in the overall medal standings, ahead of such recognized sports powers as Norway , Finland , Switzerland , Italy , France , Germany . In addition, thanks to Wenzel, Liechtenstein became the most sparsely populated country in the history of the Olympic Games, which was able to win gold.
  • For the first time, a sprint was included in the biathlon program of the Winter Olympics. The first champion in the new discipline was Frank Ulrich of the GDR .
  • The Soviet skater Marina Cherkasova at the time of the Olympics was only 15 years old and 3 months old, which did not stop her from winning silver together with Sergei Shakhrai .
  • The silver of the dance couple Kristina Regetsi and Andras Shallai became the first and so far the only Olympic medal of Hungary at the Winter Olympics after 1956 .
  • The bronze of the 22-year-old skier Ivan Lebanov at a distance of 30 km was the first medal at the Winter Olympics in the history of Bulgaria . Prior to this, Bulgarian athletes participated in the Winter Games 9 times, but always remained without awards.
  • The legendary Soviet skier Galina Kulakova won her eighth and last Olympic medal - silver in the relay.
