It is a small bird about 12 cm long, stocky build. The main color is green with a short tail of conical shape. Sexual dimorphism is expressed , males have a blue color on the primary primary and opaque feathers of the wing, primary feathers and on the uppertail (blue is much less pronounced on the wings of the subspecies Forpus xanthopterygius spengeli ). Females are completely green, sometimes with a pale yellow color around the eyes. Therefore, they are easily confused with the look of Forpus passerinus . Subspecies are distinguished primarily by the intensity of the dark and the number of yellow plumage.

The species is predominantly found in lowland areas, but is locally distributed up to 1200 meters above sea level in southeastern Brazil. It is found in forests, thickets, savannas and pastures. There are usually about 20 birds in a flock, but their number can increase to more than 50 around fruit trees and grass crops. Mostly widely distributed, but more common in the Amazon.

These are monogamous birds. They nest in the hollow trunks of trees and their branches, and sometimes in the nests of other birds. In laying from 3 to 7 eggs.
