Biography

Giampaolo Ambrozi was born on July 28, 1940 in the municipality of Pergine-Valsugana , Trentino-Alto Adige region . Even in childhood, he became interested in sledding, over time he began to show good results, passed the selection for the national team. The first major success at the international level was in 1962, when, together with his partner in double sledges, Giovanni Graber won the gold medal at the World Championships in Polish Krynica.

In 1964, thanks to a series of successful performances, he won the right to defend the honor of the country at the Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck , at the first Olympic luge competitions in history. In the men's singles, he drove unsuccessfully, took only fifteenth place, while in doubles with Graber he shared fifth position with athletes from Poland. Shortly after these competitions, he decided to end his career as a professional athlete, losing his place in the national team to young Italian sleigh riders such as Karl Brunner and Paul Hildgartner .
