Born in Osaka in the family of a missionary priest. She received her education at the Oxford High School, where in her free time she took part in local theater productions. In 1928, she made her debut in London on the West End , and at the end of the decade, Rawlings toured the United States and Canada . Actresses made her debut on the big screen in 1929, appearing later in six films, including Roman Holidays (1953), Ripper Hands (1971) and Follow Me (1972). She was also known for her work on television, in particular for her roles in the television films Hamlet (1947) and Jekyll and Hyde (1990).
Rawlings was twice married. The first husband was actor Gabriel Toyon, and the second was Sir Robert Barlov, from whom she gave birth to a child. The actress died at her home in Buckinghamshire two weeks before her ninetieth birthday.
