Apple A8

Apple A8 - 64-bit 2-core ARM - Apple 's microprocessor from the Apple Ax series. It implements the ARMv8-A instruction set, used in the iPhone 6 smartphone, in the iPod touch 6G player and in the iPhone 6 Plus phablet [9] . The processor as well as its predecessor A7 belongs to the wording of Apple to the class of desktop processors ( Desktop Processor ), thanks to multitasking and a wide range of tasks performed.

Description

The Apple A8 processor was introduced by Apple on September 9, 2014 at the iPhone 6 presentation at the Flint Center [10] . It is a 64-bit ARM chip, with a more developed 64-bit architecture and enhanced graphics performance compared to the previous generation of Apple A7 chips [11] . According to Apple, the A8 processor cores are 25% more productive than the A7, and the graphics - by 50% [12] .

In a single package with an A8 processor for the iPhone 6, LPDDR3 standard memory is packed with 1 GB. [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18]

The processor has a higher energy efficiency than previous processors, since it is made according to a more modern 20 nm technological process at TSMC and Samsung semiconductor factories [19] [3] .

According to early data from Geekbench, it is assumed that the frequency of the dual-core processor is 1.4 GHz. [13] [5] The number of transistors is estimated at 2 billion, the area - 89 mm 2 [15] .

To improve energy efficiency in Apple products, the AX uses a co-processor (microcontroller) NXP LPC18B1UK with the ARM Cortex-M3 core [16] [17] ( Apple M8 trademark) [10] , processing signals from various sensors (accelerometers, gyros, barometer, light sensor, etc.).

The Apple A8 TDP is presumably 2W.
