Cañasgordas ( Spanish: Cañasgordas ) is a city and municipality in the west of Colombia , in the Antioquia department. It is part of the Western Antioquia subregion .

History
Before the arrival of the Spaniards in the territory of the municipality, representatives of the Indian tribe es: Catíos lived. The settlement from which the city later grew was founded on January 1, 1773 . The municipality of Kanyasgordas was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1823 .
Geographical position
The city is located in the western part of the department, in the highlands of Western Cordillera , about 69 kilometers northwest of Medellin , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 1770 meters above sea level [1] .
Municipality of Cañasgordas borders in the north with the municipalities of Uramita and Peke , in the east with the municipality of Buritika , in the southeast with the municipality of Giraldo , in the southwest with the municipality of Abriaki , in the west with the municipality of Frontino . The area of the municipality is 391 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2012 was 16,793 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 51.2% of the population of Kanyasgordas, women - 48.8%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 98.1% of the city's population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 1.9% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 80%.
Economics
The basis of the economy of Kanyasgordas is agricultural production and mining. On the territory of the municipality, coffee , beans, bananas, sugarcane , corn and other crops are grown.
58.3% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 31.7% are service enterprises, 9% are industrial enterprises, 1% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
