The constitutional referendum in Serbia was held on October 28 and 29, 2006 to approve the draft new Constitution of Serbia .
The overwhelming majority of voters (97%) supported the adoption of the new Constitution with a turnout of 55%. [one]
Constitution
In the first article of the new Constitution, Serbia was defined as the state of the Serbian people and all its citizens, and in the preamble of Kosovo it was defined as a province of Serbia with significant autonomy. For the first time since 1918, Serbia was called an independent state. Cyrillic became the only official alphabet, although minority languages could be used locally. [2]
The main differences of the Constitution of 2006 from the previous Constitution of 1990:
- The property could be private, corporate and universal, the previously existing social property ceased and became private.
- Foreign citizens could own property.
- The President of Serbia was the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
- For the first time, the Constitution of Serbia mentioned pan-European values and standards.
- The National Bank of Serbia became an independent body.
- Local governments have gained greater independence.
- Vojvodina received economic autonomy.
- The official anthem of Serbia became "God is the truth . "
- The rights of consumers, mothers, children and minorities were especially protected.
- The right of every citizen to receive information of public importance was guaranteed.
- Marriage was defined as the “union of man and woman.”
