Flappy Bird is a game for mobile devices developed by the Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen [1] , in which the player, using the touch of the screen, must control the flight of the bird between the rows of green pipes without touching them. It was implemented on iOS and Android .

The game was released on May 24, 2013 and received a sudden increase in popularity in early 2014. It was criticized for the complex gameplay, plagiarism of graphics and game mechanics, other observers considered it addictive. At the end of January 2014, it became the most downloaded free game on the App Store . During this time, the developer earned $ 50,000 per day for ads within the application [2] .
On February 10, 2014, Flappy Bird was removed by the developer from the App Store and Google Play [3] . After that, there was a tendency to sell smartphones with a pre-installed game, most often for a large amount [4] [5] [6] . It also caused the appearance of many game clones created by developers in the hope of repeating the success of the original [7] .

Gameplay
Flappy Bird has a gameplay featuring 2D graphics . The goal of the game is to control the flight of a bird, which continuously moves between rows of green pipes. When faced with them, the game ends. Management is done by touching the screen, in which the bird makes a small jerk up. In the absence of jerking, the bird falls due to gravity, and the game also ends. Points are accumulated with each successful flight between two tubes. The gameplay is unchanged throughout the game.
Development
Flappy Bird was developed by Dong Nguyen within a few days. The main character of the game (bird) was developed in 2012 for another game, the development of which was discontinued. Nguyen himself claims that any component of his games has a passage, and he does not create impassable games [8] .
Nguyen believes modern Western games are too confused. His company, .GEARS Studios , talks about his games: “Everything is clean, extremely difficult, and it is incredibly fun to play” [9] .

Flappy Bird was originally released on May 24, 2013 [10] with iPhone 5 support. Subsequently, the game was optimized for iOS 7 in September 2013 [11] . In January 2014, the game topped the list of free applications in the American and Chinese App Store [11] [12] , in the same month, the British App Store , which was advertised as the “new Angry Birds ” [1] . In early 2014, The Verge reported that developers earned $ 50,000 per day for in-app ads. [13]
Clones
On February 10, 2014, Flappy Bird was removed by the developer from the App Store and Google Play [3] . Removal caused the appearance of numerous parodies of the game [14] . Two days after the removal of the original game, CNET published a review of seven clones of the game, calling them quite distant from the original, but highlighting Splashy Fish as the closest clone to Flappy Bird [15] [16] [17] .
Due to the popularity of Flappy Bird, other Dong Nguyen games, such as Super Ball Juggling and Shuriken Block , at the beginning of February 2014 took 6th and 18th places in the App Store top chart, respectively [18] .
Reviews
Flappy Bird received various reviews from critics. On the Metacritic website , the game received an average of 52 out of 100, based on votes from seven critics [19] .
Technology editor Patrick O'Rourke from Canada.com wrote that he hates Flappy Bird , an “absolutely terrible video game,” and that it’s “one of the worst games I've ever played,” and suggests that people stop playing because “it sucks” [20] .
However, a more positive review came from Jennifer Whiteside with Amongtech.com , who suggested that this game could overshadow Candy Crush Saga as the most popular mobile game of 2014 due to the addiction and excitement around the game [21] .
The complexity of the gameplay has become a source of anger from many players, one of which stated that it took him half an hour to reach five points [22] .
