Biography

Emelian Matlaev was born on August 14, 1904 in the village of Okop (now the Zolochiv district of the Kharkov region of Ukraine ). After graduating from a rural school, he worked at a factory. At the beginning of World War II he was in occupation. After his release in August 1943, Matlaev was drafted into the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War. He was wounded twice in battles [1] .

By January 1945, Red Army soldier Emelyan Matlaev was a telephone platoon operator of the 780th Infantry Regiment of the 214th Infantry Division of the 52nd Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the forcing of the Oder . On the night of January 25-26, 1945, Matlaev crossed the Oder in the area of ​​the settlement of Zedlits [2] 5 kilometers north of Olau (now Olav ) and made a connection between the battalion command and units, after which he uninterruptedly supported it, quickly eliminating it damage. He personally participated in the battles, only during the reflection of one of the counterattacks he destroyed 15 enemy soldiers and officers. Being surrounded, he continued to fight until he died. He was buried northwest of Zedlitz [1] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 10, 1945 for “courage, bravery and heroism shown in the struggle against the German invaders”, Red Army soldier Emelyan Matlaev was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .

Matlaev’s busts were installed in Zolochev and in his native village [1] .
