The owner of Gary Barnett ( English ) of the developer company Extell Development Company for the 15 years preceding the construction, was engaged in the purchase of land and air rights. Finally, the idea of a skyscraper took shape after the 2008 crisis [2] . The building was designed by a French architect, Pritzker Prize winner Christian de Portzampark . The interiors were designed by New York-based designer Thomas Jul-Hansen [3] .

As of February 2012, half of the premises in the still unfinished skyscraper were sold for $ 1 billion [4] . In May 2012, the skyscraper penthouse was purchased by the Prime Minister of Qatar al-Thani [5] for a record $ 90 million [6] . On October 29 of that year, during Hurricane Sandy, a construction crane on top of a skyscraper under construction was damaged. Nearby buildings were evacuated [7] [8] . A week later, the crane was restored.

The skyscraper has 75 floors [9] . Its facades are made in the form of alternating strips of dark and light glass, which allows for an additional influx of sunlight [10] . At the time of the opening, the skyscraper became the tallest residential building in New York [11] .
