Biography

Jane Withers was born to the family of Ruth and Walter Keaters, who taught Bible lessons at a local Presbyterian school. She began her career at the age of three with participation in radio shows. In the early 1930s, Withers moved with her mother to Hollywood , where she initially became a children's model, [2] and in 1934 made her film debut in the comedy "Shining Eyes", which brought her first success. In the following years of the decade, she continued to appear on the big screen a lot, appearing in such films as Ginger (1935), Farmer Marries (1935), and Shooting High (1940).

In the 1940s, Withers became the heroine of two novels designed for teenagers - Jane Withers and the Chamber of Secrets and Jane Withers and the Ghost of the Violin . In these novels, the main character has the same name and appearance as the actress, but the plot takes place in an alternative reality, where she is an ordinary teenager, not an actress.

In 1958, after appearing in the drama "The Giant ", with James Dean in the title role, the actress almost stopped acting on the big screen, moving to television. In the future, she had roles in the television series "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour", "The Monster Family" and " She wrote the murder ." Withers also remembered her role in the television commercial for the detergent Comet , where her character was named Josephine the Plumber. [3] The actress voiced Laverne in the animated films The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002).

In 1947, Withers married a wealthy Texas oilman, William P. Moss, from whom she gave birth to three children. The marriage was not happy, and six years later the couple divorced. In 1955, the actress married Kenneth Herrera, one of the member of the musical group The Four Freshmen, who became the father of her two children. In 1968, Herrer died in a plane crash in California . In 1986, at the age of 34, her eldest son died from his first marriage, Walter Randall Moss. According to the actress, only strong faith helped her to overcome all difficulties and personal losses.

Her contribution to the US film industry is marked by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
