He was a professor in Heidelberg and Berlin .
Of his scholarly works devoted mostly to the Persian language - for the study of which he published the first grammar and anthology in 1805 - as well as the history of the East , the most important: “Geschichte der Kreuzzüge nach morgenländ. und abendländ. Berichten ” ( Leipzig , 1807–32). The merit of this work is that it is based for the first time on eastern sources; but at the same time he does not critically differentiate tradition from historical facts.
