Biography

Claudia McNeill was born into a family of African-American and Indian Apache . [1] Shortly after her birth, the family moved to New York , where she soon remained in the care of her mother, after her father left the family. At the age of twelve, McNeil began working at the Heckscher Children’s Assistance Fund, where she met a Jewish couple who later adopted her. She showed great interest in Judaism, but in 1952 converted to Catholicism. [2] McNeill was educated as a librarian, but became interested in music and began performing in Harlem and Greenwich Village nightclubs , as well as in vaudeville.

In 1953, her Broadway debut in the play The Crucible took place. Four years later, the actress received accolades from critics for her role in the production of Langston Hughes's “Absolutely unearthly”. In 1959, McNeil played one of the brightest roles in her theatrical roles - Lina Younger in the drama Zest in the Sun, and two years later embodied this image on the screens in the movie of the same name. This role was brought by the actress of the nomination for the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards. In the following years, McNeill starred in television a lot, where in 1964 she was nominated for an Emmy for a supporting role in the television series Nurses.

The actress was married twice. From the first spouse who died in World War II , she gave birth to two sons who were killed during the Korean War . [3] In the 1960s, she married a second time, but the marriage was short-lived and ended in divorce. McNeill completed her career in 1983, and two years later moved to an actor’s nursing home in Englewood , New Jersey , where she died of diabetes complications in 1993.
