Luhan is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name . In the city there are auto and railway stations.
Luhan is best known for its large neo-Gothic basilica , erected in honor of the Virgin Mary Luhanska , the patron saint of Argentina. Every year more than 6 million people make pilgrimages to the Basilica [3] , many of whom come from Buenos Aires. Luhan is known in the country as the Capital of Faith ( Spanish: La Capital de la Fe ). The city also serves as a popular day-trip destination for unbelievers, with a variety of grill restaurants that are in great demand among Argentines, and souvenir shops with kitsch religious attributes.
The basilica was designed by French architect Ulderico Kortua , construction began in 1889 , and the church was finally completed only in 1937 . Both its towers reach a height of 106 m, possessing copper roofs and bronze doors. The huge temple towers over the low-rise flat town, its main shrine is the 38-centimeter statue of the Virgin Mary. A large body that was built by the French master Aristide Kawaye-Kohl is in poor condition, attempts are being made to restore it [4] .
The museum complex of Enrique Udaondo is also located in Luhan. It presents exhibitions of colonial life in the viceroy’s house and the old town hall. The exhibits include art objects, uniforms, silverware and vehicles, including the Plus Ultra seaplane , the first seaplane that made the route from Europe to Argentina, as well as La Porteña , the first Argentine locomotive used by the Buenos Aires Western Railway . Also available for review are prison cells that contained Colonel William Carr Beresford , one of the commanders during the British invasion of the viceroyalty of Rio de La Plata, and General Cornelio Saavedra , President of the First Independent Government of Argentina ") In 1810.
Since 1987, Benedictine monks of the Kono Sur congregation have settled in the abbey of San Benito , located on the outskirts of Lujan. Being cut off from city life, the monks of the abbey keep themselves at the expense of agriculture and the publication of publications.
The city of Mercedes near Lujan serves as the residence for the archbishop of Mercedes and Lujan .
