Story
14-year-old Duncan has a very tense relationship with his stepfather Trent. Trent does not like the guy and, at any opportunity, tries to morally humiliate him. Duncan makes no attempt to stop the bullying, believing that such actions could adversely affect his relationship with his mother Pam. But everything changes after a summer vacation trip to the seaside town, where Trent has a summer house. There Duncan makes acquaintance with a neighbor girl named Susan, who is going through a difficult period in her life - her parents divorced recently, and she, like Duncan, misses her father very much. Her mother, who likes to drink a glass or two, is not at all bothered by her daughter's problems, so Susan begins to withdraw into herself, but Duncan’s arrival wakes her up.
Duncan gets bored all day sitting on the beach and he decides to explore the city. Having pulled out of the garage an old children's "princess bike", he sets off. His first stop is a coffee shop, where he meets a guy named Owen, who can’t get past the first level of Pac-Man . Duncan advises him to use move patterns to win, but he refuses, saying: "So the whole taste of the game disappears, everyone can learn the pattern." The next day, Duncan goes to a local water park , where he again meets Owen, who, as it turned out, works there as a lifeguard. He and Duncan quickly find a common language, and soon Owen offers him a job at the water park, which Duncan agrees with pleasure. Owen, in turn, is in love with the young cashier Caitlin, and each time flirts with her, but she does not reciprocate, which makes the guy a little upset.
Susan noticed that Duncan was leaving somewhere every day, but when she tried to ask him about it, she did not receive a clear answer, so she decided to follow him. Surveillance led her to the water park, where she found out where the main character actually disappears. Having stole Duncan by the pool, Sue starts a conversation with him, in which he finds out about all the troubles with his stepfather, and that this work helps him to escape from the constant humiliation of the latter. After the conversation, Duncan realizes that he has feelings for Susan and that evening, walking with her along the beach, he realizes that the girl is also not indifferent to him.
One day, returning home after a beach party, Duncan noticed Trent kissing a neighbor near the garage. From the conversation of the latter, it becomes clear that this couple in the past had romantic relationships and that the girl did not mind renewing them. Duncan, not tolerating betrayal of her mother, tells her everything, but she, as it turned out, had long suspected Trent of treason, but could not talk about it. Duncan says that he can no longer live in the midst of deception and wants to move to his father, but finds out that he refused him. On emotions, the guy runs away from home. Susan, who was watching, was following him. Meeting Duncan on the beach, Sue tried to comfort him. Word for word, and now Duncan is trying to kiss the girl, but she, apparently, was not ready for such a turn of events and pulled away from the guy, saying that it was too early.
Arriving home, a frustrated Duncan sees his mother packing. She says that the rest is over and they have to go home. Susan goes out to say goodbye and finally kisses Duncan, saying that she was simply surprised, and therefore escaped the kiss earlier. On the outskirts of Trent, I stopped at a gas station. At this time, Duncan jumps out of the van and runs to the water park, where he says goodbye to Owen and Caitlin, who finally managed to establish their relationship, and also performs several stunts on a water slide. Returning to the car, his mother climbs to him in the back seat, they hug and leave.
