Naskapi (language)

Naskapi ( Innu Aimun, Iyuw Iyimuuun, Naskapi ) is an Algonkin language spoken by the Naskapi people living in two communities (one of them, Kawavachikamach, is located on a river basin about 10 km northeast of the city of Schefferville ) in the northeast of Quebec In Canada. As of December 15, 2002, the majority of the population of Mushuau Inu had moved from the Utshimassitz community (Davis Bay) to the Natuashish community on the mainland, which is isolated on the Labrador Peninsula. It has eastern (Natuashish) and western (Kavavachikamach) dialects. People are slowly switching to English.

The term naskapi is mainly used to describe the language of people living inside Quebec and Labrador. Naskapi is a y-dialect that has many linguistic similarities with the northern dialect of the Eastern Cree language, and also has many common lexical points with the Montagnier-Naskapi language.

The Canadian syllabic is used as the writing language for napapi in Quebec, and Latin in Labrador.
