Biography
In 1970-1972 he studied at Vilnius State University with a degree in Lithuanian Language and Literature, then in 1972-1977 he studied Polish language and Polish literature at Jagiellonian University .
Since 1977, he was a researcher at the Institute of Lithuanian Language and Literature (since 1990, the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore ), and later a senior researcher. In 2001-2007 he was director of the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore.
In 1982-1984, he was a teacher at the Vilnius Pedagogical Institute (now the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences ), and from 1991-1993, at the University of Warsaw .
In 1984 he defended his thesis “Komizmas lietuvių tarybinėje prozoje” .
Since 1984, he taught at Vilnius University. In 1993-2007 and since 2012 he was the head of the Department of Polish Philology of Vilnius University (now the center of polonistics of VU); Professor (since 1999). [3] In 1997, he defended the rehabilitation work „Romano struktūros matmenys: literatūrinės komunikacijos lygmuo“ .
He translated into Lithuanian the works of Cheslav Milos , Wisław Shimborska , Slavomir Mrozek , Stanislav Lem , Bruno Schulz and other Polish authors. Since 1987, member of the Lithuanian Writers Union .
Scientific activity
The author of works on the theory of literature, literary comparative studies, the history of Lithuanian and Polish literatures. In a monograph on the structure of the novel Romano struktūros matmenys, he described the most important structural elements of the novel and presented models of the Lithuanian novel.
He translated works of Polish fiction and self-documentary prose. Compiler of anthologies and collections of works by Cheslav Milos, Wislava Shimborskaya, for whom he wrote introductory articles and comments.

Algis Kaleda Prize
The Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore in 2017 established the annual Algis Kaleda Prize (diploma, memorial gift, cash prize) for significant studies of the literary heritage of Lithuania, Lithuanian-Polish literary relations, in the field of comparative studies and cultural interaction (monographs, series of articles, academic publications and source translations). [4] . The first winner was Dr. Beata Kalemba (Department of Polonistics of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow ) [5]
