Etymology

The word came into Russian either from German ( German: Babuschen ) in the 18th century, borrowed a word from French, or directly from French ( Fr. babouches ). The word “grandmothers” in French came from Arabic (bābuš, bābuĵ), and in Arabic - from Persian ( pā-puš - shoes: pā - foot + pušidän - cover). Borrowing the word “ grandmothers” from Turkic languages , where the word has penetrated along the same chain as in French, is phonetically less likely. From the Turkish language in the old-Russian word came in the plural popuchi, meaning "Turkish shoes." Dialectal papychѝ, papuch among the Nekrasov Cossacks who emigrated to the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century, meant “shoes without backs” [1] .

Thanks to contacts with German shoemakers , a similar word pampushi was formed in Russian, meaning “Turkish shoes worn over bosovik or leather stockings”, and in the Arkhangelsk region - “woman shoes” [1] .

Description

Grannies are most common in Turkey and North African countries. Currently, the main manufacturers and suppliers of these shoes is Morocco .

Initially, shoes were sewn from embossed morocco , now grandmothers are made using fabrics or weaving.

Grannies may have both rounded and sharp, sometimes noses bent upwards.
