Biography
Born in Groden, near Hamburg, where his father was a preacher; 16 years old, he entered the doctrine of the director of hydraulic structures Woltman for practical familiarization with this matter; at the same time, he zealously studied mathematical sciences. In 1796 he entered the University of Gottingen.
Two years later, along with Benzenberg, he began to observe falling stars. In 1826, he made the first attempt to build forecast weather maps [4] .
In 1811, he became a professor of mathematics in Breslavl and in 1826 in Leipzig, where he was subsequently rector. Corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences from December 13, 1833. His sons: Karl Wilhelm German (1816–1843) and Heinrich Bernhard Christian (1819–1884) are scientists.

- For the physical dictionary of Gehler (Gehlers "Physikal. Wörterbuch") 1825 et seq. He wrote articles, mainly on optics.
