Content
History
Founded in 1950 by the decision of Emperor Haile Selassie I with the assistance of Canadian Jesuit Lucien Matte as a two-year Addis Ababa University College. Over the next two years, the college was closely associated with the University of London . Writer Richard Cummings In the early 1960s, he worked in the Faculty of Law. In 1962, renamed the University of Haile Selassie I.
After his victory, the Provisional Military Administrative Council temporarily closed the university on March 4, 1975 and sent 50 thousand students to the countryside to support the new regime. Since that time, the university has the current name.
In 1979, the university opened the first sets of magistracy .
In 1987, PhD training programs were opened.
In December 2002, three leading university leaders resigned in disagreement with increased government interference in the university’s internal affairs. Officials tried to force the university to change the system for assessing students' knowledge, which corresponded to the system of self-criticism that the ruling party establishes [1] .
In the 2009/2010 academic year, the university had 20,701 applicants, 7,127 graduates and 14,669 post-graduate students, which in total was 42,497 people [2] .
Campuses and programs
Addis Ababa University has thirteen campuses. Twelve of them are in Addis Ababa, and another Debre-Zeyt . He also has a network of branches in the cities of Ethiopia. The government is conducting targeted recruits from high school graduates.
The University includes the Institute of Ethiopian Studies, led by the British Africanist Richard Pakhurst .
