Biography

Klaus-Dieter Kirchstein was born on August 14, 1960. He began to actively engage in boxing in his early childhood, was trained in the Berlin sports society "Dynamo". He achieved the first serious success in the ring in 1979, when he made his debut at the adult national championship and immediately took second place. A year later, he repeated this achievement, a year later he rose from the easiest weight to the lightest, but again settled into second position. In 1982, he finally became the champion of the GDR in boxing and, thanks to a series of successful performances, was granted the right to represent the country at the World Championships in Munich - reached the semi-finals stage here, after which he lost to Soviet boxer Viktor Miroshnichenko , who eventually took silver.

After receiving the bronze medal of the world championship, Kirchstein continued to enter the ring in the first team of the national team, taking part in all the major international tournaments. So, in 1983, he defended the title of champion of the country and went to the European Championship in Varna, from where he brought another bronze medal. A year later, he repeated his success at the East German Championship and was regarded as the main candidate for participation in the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles , but the socialist countries boycotted these competitions for political reasons, and the performance at the Olympics did not take place. Instead, Kirchstein boxed at the Druzhba-84 alternative tournament organized in Havana — he was defeated by Cuban Ramon Ledon in the semi-final. For these achievements he was awarded the bronze order " For merits before the Fatherland ."

In 1985, Klaus-Dieter Kirchstein won the GDR championship for the fourth time and visited the European Championships in Budapest, where, however, he managed to reach only the quarter-finals stage, losing to Yugoslav Lubyshe Simic , the future winner of this tournament. The last in his sports career was in 1986, he was unable to win the national championship (lost to European champion Rene Brightbart in the final), because of which he lost his leadership in the team and was forced to box in secondary less prestigious tournaments.
