The Russian men's handball team , according to the general opinion of experts and players, fell into a very difficult group. Our team went to the rivals of Croatia - the winner and silver medalist of the last two world championships, the South Korean team, who beat Russia at the Athens Olympics , and only a meeting with the Moroccans should not have caused concern.
The Russian national team began its performance at the 2007 World Handball Championship on January 20. In the first match, Russian handball players drew 32:32 with South Korea. Until the 27th minute, the Russians almost always led the score (but never came off by more than 2 goals), but for the remaining 3 minutes before the break the Koreans not only equalized, but also went ahead - 17:15. The advantage of the Koreans in the score continued in the second half of the meeting (again, only once they came off 3 goals) until the very last minute, when the final score was established by Alexey Rastvortsev. The team was saved by goalkeeper Alexei Kostygov, reflecting 2 consecutive shots from 6 meters in the last 5 seconds of the game.
Having defeated Morocco in the next match, and then losing to Croatia, Russia from the second place entered the main round of the competition, where only in the last match with the Czechs was she able to secure a ticket to the playoffs. In the quarter finals, the Russians, with a one-goal difference, lost to the Polish national team, and now they will play places from 5 to 8.

After the Russians lost to the Danes in the previous game, only a victory was required in the game against the Hungarians of the Russian national team. Moreover - a victory with a difference of 2 or more goals, because otherwise you had to rely on the victory or a draw of the Danish team in a duel with the Czechs. If the Czechs beat the Danes, then 3 teams - Denmark, Russia and Hungary - would have 4 points each, in which case the distribution of places would be based on the best goal difference in personal meetings.
The start of the match, as in almost all previous meetings, was not left to the Russians: by the 8th minute they were losing 2: 5. The same difference in “−3” persisted until the end of the first half - 12:15. The Hungarians scored 5 goals before the break Gyula Gal. Among the Russians, as always, the most productive were Eduard Koksharov and Denis Krivoshlykov, who accounted for 8 goals out of 12.
Thanks to the efforts of the same Eduard Koksharov, at the 36th minute Russia finally equalized the score - 16:16. Losing 18:19, the Hungarian coach changed goalkeeper Nenad Pulezhevich to Nandor Fazekas and replacing himself was justified: within 6 minutes, the Russians could not hit the goal - 19:21. But two accurate attempts from the 7-meter mark of Konstantin Igropulo, and soon “−2” turn into “+2”. But then 2 goals in a row follow Gabor Chashar, and the quick lead of Gergo Ivanchik for one and a half minutes before the whistle is 24:25. But a quick reply from afar from Alexei Rastvortsev equalized the situation. Nevertheless, Russia did not suit anyone in any way.
The ending of the game was very nervous, the head coach of the Russian team Vladimir Maximov was even warned. The Hungarians defended themselves well, not giving the Russians the opportunity to make a throw, but a second before the end the responsibility was taken by the captain of the Russian team Eduard Koksharov, having sent the ball from the left corner between the legs of Fazekas. Russia won 26:25, and had to wait for a positive result of Denmark in a match with the Czech Republic. The Danes did not disappoint - 33:29, and this led the Russians to the quarterfinals of the Polish national team.

1/4 Finals
In the 1/4 final match, which took place in Hamburg , the Russian team played against the Poles, who took first place in their group. Before the match, point guard Oleg Kuleshov , who plays for the German club Magdeburg, was announced to the Russian national team. The start of the match was left to the Poles, who after five minutes were in the score 5: 2. Closer to the middle of the first half, the game leveled off, but the Russians constantly lost one or two points. At the 21st minute, Eduard Koksharov equalized for the first time in the match - 11:11. The Poles immediately responded with two productive attacks, as a result of which the gap grew to two goals. At the 25th minute, Konstantin Igropulo managed to narrow the gap in the score, and soon the score was again equal - 14:14. The end of the half, as well as the beginning, remained with the Poles. Two shots in a row Russians were reflected by goalkeeper Slavomir Shmal , the Poles realized their moments, and the teams went on a break with the score 16:14 in favor of the Polish national team.
During the first ten minutes of the second half, the gap of two or three goals continued to persist, but the Russians equalized the score again for forty minutes after the goals of Chipurin and Igropulo. The gap in one ball remained until the end of the match. For a minute and 45 seconds, Shmal took a seven-meter from Igropulo (only in the second half did Shmal repel four seven-meters), and Karol Beletsky brought the Poles ahead - 28:27. 31 seconds before the end, Koksharov was thrown onto the floor, who, with a face broken in blood, left the site. For 16 seconds before the end, Igrobulo got an elbow in the face. The rude Pole was removed, but the Russians had very little time for an accurate throw. 3 seconds before the end of the game, it was still produced, but Shmal confidently dealt with it.

5-8 Tournament
Having defeated the Icelandic national team with a score of 28:25, Russian handball players ahead of schedule solved the local problem, having qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games . Four years ago, at the 2003 World Cup in Portugal, also in the first game of the consolation tournament for 5-8 places, the Russians played with the Icelanders and also won.
At the end of the first half, the Russians were 16:12, but two goals from the Icelanders narrowed the gap by the end of the half to two goals. At the same time, Vitaly Ivanov did not have enough time - the ball flew into the net of the opponent’s goal a bit later than the siren for a break. Ten minutes in the middle of the second half turned out to be the most disastrous for the Russian team. Iceland scored six goals against Alexei Kostygov, to which Russia answered with just one. Five minutes before the end of the meeting, the Russians who were already inferior evened the score, and then stepped forward. At the beginning of the last minute of the match for the Russian national team, the bar also “played”. The final score was set by Dmitry Kovalev - 28:25.
