Biography
He studied at the University of Leipzig , where he received his Ph.D. degree; traveled a lot with a scientific purpose in Europe and Asia Minor; in 1846, he was invited as a professor to the department of ancient classical philology, aesthetics and theory of art at the Imperial University of Dorpat ; in 1850 he moved to Petersburg and was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences; he was later the keeper of the Department of Classical Antiquities of the Hermitage (since 1851) and a member of the Imperial Archaeological Commission .
