Mtiuleti ( Georgian მთიულეთი ; literally. “Mountainous country”) is a historical region in eastern Georgia on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus . It borders in the east with Gudamakari , in the south with Handa , in the west with the Republic of South Ossetia and in the north with Heavy .
Initially, Belaya Aragvi Valley belonged to it. Mtiuleti covers the territory of modern Dusheti and Kazbegi municipalities. The city of Pasanauri , famous for khinkali , is the traditional center of the region.
Mtiuleti population
Mtiulcy ( Georgian. მთიულები ) is an ethnographic group of Georgians who traditionally lived in high-mountain societies in which there were no class differences. In the Middle Ages and the feudal period, the Mtiuls were exempted from any taxes. During the invasions of Kartli and Kakheti, the Mtiuls sent troops in support of the kings of Kartli and Kakheti.
Anthropologically, Mtiula are above average height, mesokephals with blue or brown eyes and light blond or black hair.
The main occupations of the Mtiulians are cattle breeding, sheep breeding and agriculture.
