Biography

Romualdo González Fragoso was born in Seville on May 18, 1862 . He studied at the local medical school, which he graduated in 1882. Then he went to Paris to study pediatrics. Upon his return to Spain, he received a Ph.D. In 1883, he became a correspondent for the Madrid Museum of Natural Sciences. In 1884, Romualdo donated 3,000 herbarium specimens to the museum, for which he was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of Isabella the Catholic . Since 1911, he devoted himself almost entirely to the study of mycology. Gonzalez Fragoso described the mushrooms of Spain, as well as Africa and the Dominican Republic , where he traveled repeatedly. He described 544 new species of mushrooms.

In 1915, Gonzalez Fragoso took part in the creation of the Cryptogamic Herbarium of the National Museum of Natural Sciences, which was transferred to the Madrid Botanical Garden in 1928.

Romualdo González Fragoso died in Madrid on June 3, 1928 .

He was a member of many scientific societies in Europe. Among them are the Lyon Linnean Society, the Mycological Society of France, the Spanish Society of Natural History (of which he was president in 1920).
