For the first time in history, a Dutch skater won a 500 meter race at the Olympics (Dutch athletes also never won a 500 meter race at the Olympics).

After the first run, Jan Smekens was the leader (he was the sixth in this race at the 2010 Vancouver Games). The second at 0.04 seconds behind Smekens was Michel Mulder , 0.20 seconds behind the leader was the silver medalist of the 2010 Games at this distance, Japanese Keiichiro Nagashima . Olympic champion in 2010 and world champion in 2012 and 2013 at this distance, one of the main favorites Korean Mo Tae Bom was fourth in 0.25 seconds from Smekens.

In the second race, Ronald Mulder showed the best time, which allowed him to rise from sixth to third place. Nagashima ran unsuccessfully (only 16th time in the second race) and took sixth place in total. Mo Tae Bom also failed to improve his position - fifth in the second race and fourth in total. In the fight for gold, Michel Mulder managed to get ahead of Smekens by 0.01 seconds in the sum of two races.
