General Information
Thomas's father - Claudio - a former volleyball player , now owns a company engaged in graphics and printing; mother - Miriam - works with her father. Berend Jr. is married: his wife's name is Kerstin.
Thomas was born and raised in Brazil, where at the age of five he began to play tennis. Favorite coating is soil.
Berend has dual citizenship: Brazilian and German. In April 1992, he moved to Germany and began performing under its flag.
He is a fan of the football clubs Gremio and Borussia Dortmund .
Sports career
In 1997, he took part in the ATP tournament in Bucharest , where he entered the second round. In 1998, he won the first Futures and the first Challenger in Budva . In 2000, Berend made his debut in the Grand Slam tournament of the Australian Open , where he entered the second round. In February of that year, for the first time it was in the Top 100 singles rating. In July, in Amersfoort, first goes to the quarter-finals of the ATP tournament. In April 2001, he reached the quarter-finals in a tournament in Munich , and in September of the same year in Bucharest. In September 2002, Thomas won the Challenger in Sofia .
At the beginning of the 2003 season, a German tennis player reached the quarterfinals of the tournament in Chennai . In February, he achieved the same result at a tournament in Copenhagen . In April, Berend won the Challenger in San Remo , and in June in Weiden . In July, he managed to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament in Stuttgart : in the second round, he beat No. 4 in the ranking at that time Carlos Moyu 7-6 (5) 7-6 (2). Once again, Berenda defeated the eminent Spaniard in the first round of the tournament in Costa de Suipe in February 2004. By the end of that tournament, Thomas reached the quarter-finals. In July, he reached the same stage at a tournament in Amersfoort. In November, he won the Challenger on Kish Island. In January 2005, he won the Challenger in Santiago . In early February, goes to the quarterfinals of the tournament in Milan . In April, Thomas won the Challenger in Olbia . In September, in Palermo , he beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in the quarterfinals and first reached the semi-finals of the ATP single player tournament.
