Underground Activist

She graduated from the Silesian Technical University in 1978 . By education - a technologist of automatic systems. Worked as a programmer at the Katowice Institute of Control Systems. From early youth, joined the anti-communist opposition. She was engaged in the distribution of illegal literature, including the legendary publication KOS-KOR Robotnik [1] .

In 1980, she joined Solidarity , was a member of the governing body of the Katowice union. She supervised the human rights direction, sought the release of political prisoners.

After the introduction of martial law , December 13, 1981 went underground. Since April 1982, it was on the wanted list, but due to observance of the rules of conspiracy it was never discovered by the communist state security . Actively participated in the activities of the underground structures of Solidarity, published in Polish samizdat . In 1985 she joined the "Fighting Solidarity" , led the territorial structure in Katowice.

In 1990, the arrest warrant for Yanina Yadviga Khmelevskaya was canceled. She established the Vostok Information Center in Warsaw , which focuses on human rights and the promotion of democratic ideas in Central and Eastern Europe.

Jadwiga Khmelevskaya actively supports the national democratic movements of Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet space . It closely cooperates with the Crimean Tatar movement [2] . In December 2013, Khmelevskaya signed an appeal in support of the Ukrainian Euromaidan . Khmelevskaya’s speeches were sharply criticized by Russian organizations of the Crimea as hostile and anti-Russian [3] .

In early 2012 , in the midst of protests , Khmelevskaya warned the Russian opposition against negotiations with the ruling regime [4] .

Ideological and political characteristics

Ioannina Yadviga Khmelevskaya is a vivid representative of the radical "fundamentalism of Solidarity." Her views are characterized by irreconcilable anti-communism , social Catholicism , national patriotism , political uncompromisingness. Interestingly, such positions are characteristic of the leaders of the older generation of Solidarity ( Andrzej Gvazda , Marian Yurchik , Severin Yavorsky ). Khmelevskaya is also distinguished by human rights accents and special international activity.

She was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit (from the Polish government in exile ), the Order of the Renaissance of Poland (from President Lech Kaczynski), the Order of Merit for Lithuania , special honorary badges from veterans of Solidarity.
