Story

Arriving as a guest at the wedding, young Chandni ( Sridevi ) meets her friend's groom - Rohit ( Rishi Kapoor ). The young man is fascinated by the girl from the very first minutes, and gradually Chandni succumbs to his courtship. Rohit decides to marry her, despite the fact that her parents and sister do not like her because of her lower social status. However, misfortune occurs, and Rohit is half paralyzed. Chandni does not abandon his fiancé and tries to look after him while he is confined to a wheelchair. But his relatives blame her for what happened to Rohit and constantly pester her with reproaches and accusations. Seeing this, Rohit decides that Chandni will only get worse with him, and tells her that she no longer loves her, in the hope that she can be happy without him.

To heal a broken heart, Chandni leaves Delhi for Bombay with his girlfriend and takes a job at a travel agency led by Lalit Khanna ( Vinod Khanna ). The independent character of Chandni attracts the attention of her boss. His mother ( Wahida Rehman ), seeing that his son became interested in the girl for a long time after the death of his lover ( Juhi Chawla ), invites him to marry her. But Lalit cannot be bold enough to make an offer.

At work, he is forced to leave for Switzerland , where he meets Rohit, who is being treated there. They share their love stories with each other, not suspecting that they are talking about the same girl. Rohit convinces Lalita to confess her love to Chandni. Returning to India, Lalit immediately offers Chandni to become his wife. Chandni, after listening to the arguments of his girlfriend, decides to forget Rohit and agrees to the wedding.

And in the evening Rohit comes to her to inform her of her recovery and say that she still loves her. However, Chandni tells him that she has already agreed to become the wife of another.

At the wedding, Lalita and Chandni Rohit comes intoxicated. Not standing on the stairs, he slides head over heels. Chadni rushes to him with tears, hugs and shouts: "Save my Rohit." Criticism and influence

According to an article on iDiva, the film was “more of an event than a film. Even when its rental ended, the film remained a constant subject of discussion in the press. ” “Chandni” was one of the largest blockbusters of 1989 and earned 5.5 crore (55 million rupees) at the box office [3] . The Hindu writes that the film "assembled full rooms, and distributors had to dramatically increase the number of cinemas" [4] . The Times of India calls it "one of the most popular films of Indian cinema" [5] . The Hindustan Times included the film on their list of “The Greatest Hits of Yash Chopra,” saying that “he played an important role in ending the era of violence in Bollywood and brought romance back to Hindi films.”

The film also confirmed the position of Sridevi as the main star of the 80s [6] . The scene where she confronts Rishi Kapoor was recognized by as one of the “Top Ten Scenes of Yash Chopra Films” [7] . While Shridevi topped the Hindustan Times ' list of “5 main heroines” by Yash Chopra [8] , CNN-IBN also rated her as No. 1 on her list of “10 most sensual heroines of Yash Chopra”, saying that “Yash Chopra immortalized Shridevi, as the perfect Chandni ” [9] .

The role of Shridevi has become one of the most famous characters in Indian cinema, and India Today has included him in her list of “Character Characters of Yash Chopra” [10] . CNN-IBN also included her on the list of “Cult Characters Created by Yash Chopra” [11] , while NDTV took her place on her list of “The Greatest Creations of Yash Chopra”, stating that the film made Sridevi “the favorite of the nation” and “strengthened her position as the ruling actress of Bollywood ” [12] .

Featured by Shridevi, the “Chandni image” revolutionized the fashion of northern India [2] . Speaking about this image, Yash Chopra told film critic Rajiv Masand “In the production of Chandni, I had a vision of what I would like this girl to be. After I told Sridevi that most of her costumes in the film would be white ” [13] . writes “Lina Daru realized a good idea again when she created the“ Chandni image ”for Sridevi. On every street corner, Shalwar-kamiz and dupatta are sold, which gave the heroine that underestimated image that is so rarely seen on the Indian screen ” [14] . Whereas reports, “Lina Daru has been dressing the beauties of Bollywood for several years. But her simple white churidar and kurta with a striped scarf (dupatta) for Shridevi in the film “Chandni” gave the Southern Beauty an angelic look and caused Chandni Chowk shops to hit the jackpot for selling thousands of copies ” [15] . BizAsia also described the effect of the image saying “Chopra never recovered from Shridevi’s hangover” and almost always decided to represent the heroines in similar outfits ( Juhi Chawla in “ Life under Fear ” (1993), Madhuri Dikshit in “ Crazy Heart ” ( 1997)), but none of them became half as famous as Sridevi after “Chandni” ” [16] . The “Image of Chandni” was also highlighted in the famous episode of the Tandava dance performed by Sridevi, where, as Rediff says, “the actress turned into a mythical goddess in white” [17] . Chiffon Shridevi outfits were also popular. Indian Express wrote, “This film made chiffon sari a thing that every Indian woman should have in her wardrobe.” [18]

Chandney’s songs became platinum [2] , and Shridevi’s famous dance number “Mere Hathon Mein” took place on the Rediff chart of “25 Bollywood Wedding Songs” [19] . The actress also “lent” her voice for the title song of the film “Chandni O Meri Chandni” [20] , which was included in the “5 main songs” by Yash Chopra according to the Hindustan Times [8] . Talking about her role in Chandni, Sridevi said that she was “a vibrant and vibrant girl in the first half, (who) becomes quiet and climbs into the sink in the second half (of the film). I liked this reincarnation, and when you have such a director as Yash Chopra at the helm, you can be sure that he will do everything as best as possible. ”
