Biography

Jean-Michel Damaz was born in Bordeaux, his mother is the well-known harpist . Jean-Michel began studying piano at the age of five, and composition at the age of nine. The first teacher of Damaz was , composer, organist and opera director. Subsequently, he studied with Alfred Cortot at the Normal School of Music , entered the Paris Conservatory for the piano course [1] . Since 1944 he worked as an accompanist pianist with Roland Petit [2] . His teachers were Henri Busset , Marcel Dupre , Claude Delvencourt . Damaz graduated from the conservatory in 1943 as a pianist and in 1947 as a composer. At the age of nineteen he became a laureate of the Rome Prize in 1947 for the cantata Et la Belle se réveilla .

Jean-Michel Damaz quickly became a popular neoclassical composer. He was successful as a concert pianist [1] . In 1959 he became a laureate of the Grand Prize of Paris [3] . His recording of the complete collection of nocturnes and barcarol by Gabriel Foret was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque (1960) [4]
