ClassificationPreviously, it was considered a subspecies of Semnopithecus entellus , then it was raised to the rank of a species based on the totality of morphological differences. It is one of several species of the genus Semnopithecus , named after the heroes from the ancient Greek epos " Iliad ", along with the Semnopithecus hector and Semnopithecus priam . [one]
SpreadIt is found in northern India and in Pakistani Kashmir , [1] also recorded in Nepal . They inhabit various types of forests at altitudes from 2,200 to 4,000 meters above sea level. [2]
BehaviorDay tree animals. The social structure of small monkeys usually consists of male-headed groups, but there are groups that include more than one male. In Semnopithecus ajax, such groups can include up to five adult males. [3]
The breeding season is from January to June, with half of the births occurring in March. [3] Cubs feed on mother's milk until they reach the age of two, which is a record for Asian monkey species. [3] The interval between births is about 2.4 years. [3] The father takes part in raising a baby up to five months of age. [3] Usually, males guard the cubs, however cases of infanticide are recorded.
