History
During the Eastern Han Empire, these lands were part of Han'an County (汉 安县). Under the Northern Zhou Empire, they became part of Zhongjiang County (中 江 县). Under the Sui Empire, Neijiang County ((县) was formed.
In 1950, the urbanized part of Neijiang County was allocated to a separate city of Neijiang, which became subordinate to the Neijiang Special District (区 专区). In 1970, the Neijiang Special District was renamed to Neijiang District (内江 地区). In 1985, by a resolution of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Neijiang District was transformed into Neijiang City District; at the same time, the city of Neijiang was disbanded, and its territory became the Shizhong District of the Neijiang District.
