Description
The head and body of anglerfish are moderately or strongly flattened. There are bone spikes or ridges on the top of the head. They have an extremely wide mouth. Their upper jaw is able to extend, and the lower jaw protrudes forward. In the front part of the head there are usually 3 rays, one of which has a leathery thickening, which serves to lure prey - illicium . Behind the head from 1 to 3 spiny rays, which are sometimes hidden under the skin or absent. The dorsal fin is soft and shifted to the tail, the anal fin is shifted back. The ventral fins are located on the throat [2] . The pectoral fins are supported by 2-3 skeletal elements, of which the lower one is greatly enlarged, usually widened at the end, and can rotate. This allows anglers to use pectoral fins, as if bent at the elbow, for crawling on the ground.
Range
Anglerfish inhabit the tropical, temperate and arctic waters of the Arctic , Atlantic , Indian and Pacific oceans . Bottom fish often live at great depths [3] .
