History
The street leading from the former historical center of the city to the only bridge at the time of Vilia existed already in the 16th century . The adjacent territories belonged to the Radziwills [1]
Title
Worn the name of the Cathedral ( Kafedralna ulica ), as it led to the Cathedral , and Mostova ( Mostowa ulica ), as it led in the direction of the Green Bridge .
Description
The street is built up with buildings of different centuries and styles - from single-storey houses of the Baroque and Classicism to modernist buildings of the late XX century . The perspective of the street and its separate types in several drawings, watercolors, paintings depicted by the artist Mstislav Dobuzhinsky . One of his works became an element that opened on November 10, 2011 near Cathedral Square, opposite Tilto Street, a monument to the artist (sculptor Kestutis Musteikis, architect Algimantas Umbrasas) [2] [3] .
On the street there are several small hotels - "Senatoriai" (Tilto 2) [4] , a hotel and restaurant "Dvaras" in a historic building, recognized as a historical and architectural monument (Tilto 3) [5] , opened in 2008 the hotel "Hotel Tilto" (Tilto 8) [6] , as well as, since 2005 , the cafe Senatorių kolonos (Tilto 2a) [7] , opened in 2009 the restaurant Tres Mexicanos (Tilto 2) [8] and similar institutions.
Noble Manor
Among the most remarkable buildings of the street is the late baroque manor residence with rococo features, included as a monument of architecture of local importance (AtV88) in the register of cultural values of the Republic of Lithuania [9] . The ensemble was built on the site, which in the first quarter of the XVIII century belonged to Puzina. It is assumed that the author of the project is the architect Józef Fontana, who worked in Vilna. Owners of the estate were first Dombrow, then the graphs of Gevulsky [10] . According to other sources, the building belonged to the Korsakov family, and in 1809 Matusevich was inherited [11] . The ensemble of three one-story buildings is located at the intersection of Tilto and T. Vrublevske ( Tilto g. 1 / T. Vrublevskio g. 2 ).
Two of them, south-east and north-west, are parallel to each other, coming out at Tilto’s ends. They are separated from the street by a fence with a French-style courtyard entrance, onto which are the symmetrical main facades of these two houses. In the eastern corner of the site, on T. Vrublevske Street, stands the third house of the former outbuilding, in which there was a kitchen and servants lived. This house has no decor, in contrast to the representative south-east house and the north-west residential house. The facade of a representative building is decorated with rusticated lisens , framed windows, a semicircular pediment with a relief composition of banners and a cartouche with the coat of arms of the owners. The facade on the contrary differs only in the location of the windows. The stepped roofs of both houses are tiled [10] [12] .
Part of the ensemble is depicted in watercolor (1913) by artist Mstislav Dobuzhinsky and in lithography by Yevgeny Klimov (1938), a small fragment is on the canvas of Dobuzhinsky "Tilto Street in Old Vilna" [11] . Antanas Smetona lived in this house in 1908-1909, in memory of which a memorial plate was installed on the facade facing the street [13] [14] (sculptor Konstantinas Bogdanas, architect V. Zaranka [15] ).
Classicist House Ensemble
Nearby is the ensemble of two one-story houses in the style of late classicism, forming a closed courtyard (Tilto 3; Tilto g. 3 ). These houses under high tiled roofs with wooden porticos are also included in the register of state-protected cultural heritage objects [16] . The history of buildings on this site that belonged to Michal Ostrovsky, then by Khmelevsky, Maslovsky and other changing owners, has been documented since the first half of the 18th century . [17]
House of Bank Employees
On the same side of the street in the depth of the quarter at number 7 ( Tilto g. 7 ) is a five-storey house with features of functional architecture of the 1930s. The building was built in 1928 - 1933 by a bank workers' cooperative. After World War II, the composer Jonas Švedas (from 1945 until his death in 1971 ), the writer Mykolas Slutskis , the poetess Valeria Valsuneene, the Soviet and party leader Xavers Kairis lived in this house [18] . The house is listed in the register of state-protected cultural heritage objects [19] .
The House of Raphael Hvoles
In the house at number 13 in 1945 - 1956 [20] [21] (or, according to other sources, in 1944 - 1959 [22] ) lived the artist Raphael Hvoles [23] . On August 24, 2004, a memorial table installed on the facade of this house was opened (sculptor Mindaugas Shnipas [21] ).
House with gallery
On the opposite side at the junction of Tilto and K. Sirvido, along the street, the facade of a two-storey residential building characteristic of the first half of the 19th century ( Tilto g. 10 / K. Sirvydo g. 8 ) is curved . A narrow courtyard on the south-west side limits the wall with buttresses . On the side of the courtyard along almost the entire second floor there is a wooden gallery, supported by Doric columns and wooden pillars.
The house stands on a plot that belonged to the Carmelite convent with the church of St. George in the 17th and 18th centuries . In 1798, the official and outbuilding buildings, together with other buildings of the monastery, were transferred to the Catholic seminary. In 1827 a second floor and a wooden gallery were built over a part of the official street.
In 1842, on the site of the former farm building, the north-western part of the modern house was erected. In 1975 - 1977 the building was reconstructed and partly restored. [24] The house is a monument of architecture of republican significance (AtR 62) and is protected by the state [25]
Landsbergis-ямamkalnis House
In a small two-storey mansion at number 23, built in 1881 , as expected, according to the project of Apollinarius Mikulski, in 1905-1906 lived a Lithuanian playwright and theatrical figure Gabrielus Landsbergis-ямemkalnis . In 1972, a memorial table with the profile of Landsbergis-ямemkalnis (sculptor Kestutis Patamsis) was installed on the house [26] . The building is guarded by the state [27] .
Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater
At the end of the street on the left south side is the second building of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater (Tilto 16), which houses the dean's office and several departments of the music department, a library, a chamber hall [28] . Adjacent to it is the Kongresų Rūmai concert hall.
