Body length 42 cm. In summer, adult birds have a light gray head, a gray body. Abdomen from dark gray to black. Pronounced sexual dimorphism is absent. South American subspecies are slightly larger and lighter.
This species nests in South America and sub-Saharan Africa. They make seasonal migrations to Spain and North America. Nest in large colonies in reed beds and swamps. These are coastal birds that are rarely found on the high seas, far from land.
Nest on the ground, in the nest two or three eggs. Young birds become sexually mature in the second year.
