Tamesis ( Spanish: Támesis ) is a city and municipality in the west of Colombia , in the Antioquia department. Included in the subregion of Southwest Antioquia .

History
The settlement from which the city later grew was founded on December 25, 1858 . The municipality of Tamesis was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1864 .
Geographical position
The city is located in the southwestern part of the department, in the highlands of Western Cordillera , south of the Cauca River , about 60 kilometers southwest (SSW) from Medellin , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 1523 meters above sea level [1] .
The municipality of Tamesis borders on the north and northeast with the municipality of Fredonia , in the east - with the municipalities of Valparaiso , La Pintada and Karamanta , in the south-west - with the municipality of Hardin , in the west and north-west - with the municipality of Herico , in the south - with territory of the department of Caldas . The area of the municipality is 264 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2012 was 15,218 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 49.7% of the population of Tamesis, women - 50.3%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 98.8% of the city's population; Indians - 0.8%; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 0.4% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 84.9%.
Economics
The basis of the economy of Tamesis is agricultural production and tourism. In the municipality, coffee , cocoa , bananas and other crops are grown.
63.2% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 21.5% are service enterprises, 13.9% are industrial enterprises, 1.4% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
