SIZO No. 1 (Saratov)

Pre-trial detention center No. 1 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Saratov Region is a pre-trial detention center located in Saratov. Full name - Federal State Institution "Detention Unit No. 1 of the Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service in the Saratov Region." Previously, it was a city prison.

Content

History

A prison prison existed in Saratov at the end of the 18th century. But at the beginning of the next century it was very dilapidated and was demolished. Therefore, at this time a new building was built, which is still located at the intersection of Astrakhan and Kutyakov streets.

The death of academician Vavilov

The outstanding scientist Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov , who was arrested and convicted on the basis of false accusations during the Stalinist period, was transferred to the Saratov prison in connection with the evacuation of prisoners from Moscow, when German troops were approaching the borders of the city. Here he was from October 29, 1941 to January 26, 1943 [1] . Vavilov died from harsh conditions, illness and exhaustion, which severely undermined his health.

Interesting Facts

In 2000, the UN Detention Center No. 1 was visited by the UN Commissioner for Human Rights, the former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson [2] .
