Lycia and Pamphylia on a map of the Roman Empire

Lycia and Pamphylia ( Latin: Lycia et Pamphylia ) is a Roman province located in the south-west of Asia Minor (modern Turkey ).

The province was formed in the year 74 during the reign of Emperor Vespasian by the merger of two regions - Lycia and Pamphylia . Lycia became part of the Roman Empire in 43–44 years under Claudius , becoming a procuratorial province, but at the same time retained wide autonomy. Pamphylia is from 25 BC. e. belonged to the province of Galatia . During the reign of Hadrian or Antoninus Pius, the province of Pisidia also joined the province. The province of Lycia and Pamphylia was ruled by the imperial legate in the rank of praetor . Either since 135, or since the reign of Marcus Aurelius, the appointment of the governor there has become the prerogative of the Senate (thus, Lycia and Pamphylia became a Senate province ). In 297, the region began to belong to the diocese of Asia and was governed by the presidium , and in 325 it was divided into separate regions - Lycia and Pamphylia.
