History
During the Qin Empire, Wuyang County (武 阳县) existed here. Under the Sui Empire, in 593, it was renamed to Genshaw.
In 1950, the county became part of the Neijiang Special District (内江 专区). In 1958, the county was transferred to the Special Region of Leshan (乐山 专区). In 1968, Leshan Special District was renamed to Leshan District (乐山 地区). In 1985, Leshan County was transformed into Leshan City District. In 1997, six counties of Leshan City District were allocated to a separate Meishan County (眉山 地区).
In 2000, by a resolution of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Meishan County was transformed into an urban district.
